Multilevel debris flow barrier system Krvavec
Krvavec / Slovenia
Project characteristics
Following the extreme debris flow event in May 2018 near the Krvavec ski resort in Slovenia, field investigations and modelling were carried out to prepare an appropriate design for mitigating future debris flows. Various mitigation measures were planned and implemented. These included among others, a slit check dam for sediment retention at the bottom of the river (planned but not relised yet) and the installation of 16 flexible barriers with a retention capacity of approx. 8000 m3. During the recent extreme weather events of August 2023, the proposed mitigation measures proved to be effective against debris flows and successfully prevented debris from being transported downstream causing damage to people and infrastructure.
