To protect the entrance and exit of an existing tunnel portal in Val d'Anniviers, Valais, Switzerland, from frequent rockfall, it was decided to build a flexible protection structure. The flexible gallery protection (canopy system) was the more favourable option compared to extending the tunnel and relocating the road. Calculations and simulations showed that the canopy, capable of absorbing rockfalls of up to 2,000 kJ and jump heights of up to 8 m, offers the best possible protection for the road.
